Island Plastics / Stimson

The Stimson Alpine and Island Plastics St Michel
appear to have so much in common as to be the same
van under different names.

If anyone can enlighten me as to the differences, for the sake of accuracy, please get in touch.
The information here is based on the St.Michel.

St Michel

Island Plastics based the St Michel on the long wheelbase, hightop version of the Trafic so it has a steel roof and full height rear doors

Unlike the vast majority of van conversions, the interior furniture is all made from gelcoated GRP, which some people see as giving the advantage
of easily wipe-clean hygenic surfaces while others feel that it gives a rather clinical look.

The seating arrangements consist of two swivelling captains seats and a long settee behind the drivers seat, the settee has a large pull out storage drawer underneath. The fresh water tank, water heater, pump and leisure battery are also under here.

The settee can be used as a single bed or a double. Making up the double is done by pulling out the storage drawer and a rear extention into the gangway then folding the two solid plywood bases on top. The base cushions are then put back into place to form a 6'3" x 3'10" (1903mm X 1170mm) bed.

Opposite the settee is the kitchen unit which has hinged worktops covering a sink with drainer and a two burner hob with an oven/grill underneath. The 3 way (12v 240v & gas) fridge is beneath the sink.

Under the oven is a floor level drawer and under the hob is a large locker with a shelf.

Just about visible in this shot you can see the positions of the overhead lockers and the overcab storage

The shower & toilet are located in a separate "wet room" which is the full width of the van. This room is behind the main living area and can be accessed either via a folding door from the living quarters or directly from outside via the rear van doors on wet days to save wet clothing and muddy footwear contaminating the carpet and soft furnishings.

The Purple Haze (apologies to J Hendrix) in the photos is caused by the tinting on the rear door (bathroom) windows.

As you can see - this one is loaded up and ready to go. (Don't awnings take up a lot of room in a van of this size?)
